Providence Health & Services Certified Surgical Technologist - Operating Room *1.0 FTE, Day, $5,000 Sign-On Bonus* in Polson, Montana


Providence is calling a Certified Surgical Technologist (Operating Room, Day Shift, 1.0 FTE, Full-Time) to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Polson, Montana. In this position you will:

  • Anticipate surgeon’s needs throughout procedures.

  • Assist Circulating Nurse in proper identification of specimens.

  • Assist in draping patient and operative area.

  • Assist surgical team with safe transfer of patient from carrier to OR table and from table back to carrier.

  • Assist with patient transportation as needed, following established safety guidelines.

  • Assist, under RN circulator supervision, with circulation duties.

  • At the end of the surgery, assist in applying dressings and preparing patient for transfer to carrier and PACU.

  • Clean room according to policies and procedures in expedient manner.

  • Complete all assigned tasks and duties accurately and timely.

  • Correctly handles specialty equipment and instruments.

  • Incorporate cultural, educational and developmental needs into plan of care.

  • Maintain an adequate supply of instruments and supplies in each room to meet patients changing needs.

  • Report all drains and packs to Circulating Nurse.

  • Use age specific standards, policies and procedures and guidelines to perform treatments and procedures that are routine for unit/clinic on patients.

  • Use age specific standards, policies and procedures and guidelines to reinforce basic patient education for ages of patients served.

  • Work with circulating nurse, gathering all necessary equipment and supplies to meet patient and surgeon needs according to policy and procedure for patients of all ages.

  • Collaborate with physicians and hospital staff to ensure optimal patient care.

  • Maintain all instrumentation and supplies. Keeps all inventory in working order and follows through immediately with the director for any repair or inventory concerns (OB,OR,ER).

  • Participate in evaluations of new products, methods or equipment to determine quality.

  • Share the responsibility of general departmental duties with all OR team members, including but not limited to: preparation for next day’s cases, checking, cleaning and restocking OR rooms, general cleaning, checking outdates supplies and instruments, putting away instruments and supplies as received and sharing responsibility in maintaining appropriate inventory levels.

  • Document critical incidents when necessary.

  • Serve as a clinical resource for physicians and other departments.

  • Serve as a mentor or educational resource for new employees and students.

  • Clean sterile storage areas as appropriate to meet CS guidelines and Infection Control Standards.

  • Clean trays, instruments and equipment and makes ready for processing and for use.

  • Date and rotate stock in all areas.

  • Gather contaminated utensils from area of use as appropriate to take to CSR for decontamination and sterilization.

  • Keep logs of autoclaves’ proper functioning.

  • Maintain an accurate sponge and needle count, being aware at all times, the location of sponges and needles, etc deficiencies to meet standard.

  • Notify appropriate personnel of malfunctioning of autoclaves, which may have compromised sterility. Removes items for use as appropriate.

  • Notify maintenance appropriately in cases of improper autoclave function.

  • Open and prepare the sterile field, using safe aseptic technique at all times.

  • Participate in the following CSR and distribution functions: Decontamination, Processing/Sterilization, Sterile Storage and Quality Control of CS Processing to meet Infection Control Standards.

  • Perform routine sterility tests and documents same.

  • Prepare trays, sets, dressings, instruments, utensils, and supplies for use.

  • Serve as a role model/expert for other staff members in the decontamination/sterilization process.

  • Sort dirty and clean instruments and transports them per policy to the contaminated area.

  • Sterilize all goods using appropriate sterilization guidelines.

  • Use appropriate cleaning substances as indicated by Hospital Safety and Infection Control Standards.

  • Actively participates in the Call Schedule.

  • Scrubs-in and sets up instruments and supplies in an efficient manner and on a timely basis prior to scheduled surgery.

  • Timekeeping: Observes all organizational/ departmental/unit policies regarding recording of time worked.

  • Make Supervisor aware of any potential problems in regard to patient, procedure or surgeon


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Tech Program

  • Certified Surgical Technician designation or obtained when employee meets testing eligibility requirements

  • Upon completion of orientation, department specific skills or certifications

  • CPR for Health Caregivers

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 1 year Operating Room experience

  • GI endoscopy experience
