Providence Pharmacist in Polson, Montana


Providence is calling a Pharmacist (Pharmacy, Days, 0.5 FTE) to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Polson, Montana. We are a community of caregivers delivering every day on our Mission to provide compassionate care that is accessible for all – especially those who are poor and vulnerable.

In this position you will:

  • Accurately enter MD medication order into computer system.

  • This position will work in retail, hospital, and anticoagulation.

  • Check for appropriate therapeutic use, appropriate dosage, duplicates, allergies, drug interactions, order changes and contraindications.

  • Contact MD if data suggest sub- or supra- Therapeutic drug therapy or if patient safety is at risk.

  • Prepare pharmacokinetic consult if appropriate.

  • Contact MD or nurse as necessary to clarify orders, resolve problems identified during review.

  • Demonstrate the ability to assess patients medication therapy needs based on diagnosis, lab values, medical history, and current physical status.

  • Determine identity, dose and administration schedule of medication or IV admixture ordered.

  • Document intervention and its outcome for use in drug therapy quality improvement efforts.

  • Ensure that dosage form is properly labeled. Attaches any auxiliary labels that are required.

  • Ensure that inpatient medication gets to the inpatient by appropriate transport mechanism.

  • Oversee technician support of the dispensing process and checks work before prescription goes to a patient.

  • Perform calculations necessary for dosage form preparation and compounds the dosage forms.

  • Properly compounds, labels and records doses of investigational drugs dispensed in facility.

  • Follow institutional procedures for handling of investigational drugs. Acts as the unblended observer in some trials.

  • Recognize physician order requiring a therapeutic interchange and writes order change on the chart.

  • Review lab data pertinent to drug therapy eg drug levels and kidney function monitors.

  • Review regimen for formulary compliance proposes alternative therapy with most cost effective agent when non-formulary item is ordered.

  • Utilize computer programs to do calculations necessary to maximize therapy and avoid toxicity.

  • Oversee OJT portion of training program for pharmacy techs and new pharmacists.

  • Provide didactic portion of a Board of Pharmacy approved technician training program.

  • Provide supervision and direction for pharmacy staff.

  • Work with nursing staff to ensure safe medication administration.

  • Acts as preceptor/adjunct faculty for pharmacy students engaged in clerkship and externship rotations at SJMC. Ensure that students are exposed to all aspects of pharmacy operation.

  • Direct technician work as necessary to accomplish priority tasks.

  • Provide the final check on all technician work done as part of the preparation, labeling and dispensing process.

  • Actively Participate in pharmacy and nursing in-service education.

  • Participate as a member and drug information resource to Patient Care Conferences.

  • Provide specific guidance to individual practitioner in the use and rationale for pharmacy-directed medication protocols.

  • Respond to lay persons inquiries.

  • Respond verbally or in writing to specific questions from MD, nurses, other health professionals or students concerning drugs and drug therapy.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of Montana

  • Must have a thorough understanding of drug therapy principles and be capable of designing, implementing and monitoring a therapeutic plan

  • Ability to assess patients medication therapy needs based on diagnosis, lab values, medical history, and current physical status

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Doctorate of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy

  • Prior hospital pharmacy and outpatient anticoagulation experience
