Providence Surgical Technologist Certified First Assistant *$2,000 Sign-On Bonus* in Polson, Montana

Description:

Providence is calling a Surgical Technologist Certified First Assistant (Operating Room, Days, 1.0) to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Polson, Washington. In this position you will:

  • Provide visualization of the operative site by the following:

  • Appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding.

  • Packing with sponges.

  • Digital manipulation of tissue.

  • Suctioning, irrigating, and sponging.

  • Manipulation of suture materials (loops, tags, running sutures)

  • Proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the Surgeon’s view.

  • Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis:

  • Permanent:

  • Clamping and/or cauterizing vessels or tissue.

  • Typing and/or ligating clamped vessels or tissue.

  • Applying hemostatic clips

  • Placing local hemostatic agents.

  • Temporary:

  • Applying tourniquets and demonstrating awareness of the indications/contraindications for use with knowledge of side effects of extended use.

  • Applying vessel loops.

  • Applying non-crushing clamps

  • Applying direct digital pressure.

  • Participate in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques as appropriate.

  • Select and apply the appropriate wound dressings, including the following:

  • Liquid or spray occlusive materials.

  • Absorbent material affixed with tape or circumferential wrapping.

  • Immobilizing dressing (soft or rigid).

  • Utilize appropriate techniques to assist with the closure of body planes.

  • Utilizing running or interrupted subcutaneous sutures with absorbable or nonabsorbable material.

  • Utilizing subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips.

  • Closing skin with the method indicated by the surgeon (suture, staples, etc.).

  • Postoperative subcutaneous injection of the local anesthetic agent as directed by the surgeon.

  • Provide assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.

  • Prepare for the procedure by maintaining open communication channels with Charge Nurse and surgeons

  • Assist in the turnover process to include breaking down the sterile field, and preparing a room for the next case.

  • Communicate effectively to the members of the team to ensure all supplies utilized are accounted for in the procedure.

  • Make Supervising Surgeon and OR Manager aware of any potential problems in regard to the patient, procedure, or surgeon. Performs accurate surgical counts as required by departmental policy and communicates the information to the circulating nurse.

  • Perform and appropriate scrub, according to department policy, for all surgical procedures.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Successful completion of an accredited surgical technologist program

  • National certification as a Certified First Assistant Surgical Technician

  • 1-year operating room experience as a Certified Surgical Technician

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card must be from the following authorized governing bodies: American Heart Association (AHA) - (BLS Provider), American Red Cross (ARC) - (BLS for Health Care Provider), or Military Training Network (MTN) – (Healthcare Provider) upon hire

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 2 years of operating room experience as a Certified Surgical Technician

  • Demonstrated performance of 15 laparoscopic or thorascopic procedures in the past 24 months including documentation of competency

  • Demonstrated performance of first-assisting on 50 abdominal/pelvic or thoracic cases, including documentation of competency
